Christmas 2023 changed everything for us
When Shawn unwrapped a set of custom engraved rock drink coasters from his friend Chris, he wasn’t expecting to find his next business venture. But there they were—laser-engraved images of Shawn, his son Gage, and his best friend Atlas, a gigantic English Mastiff who had recently passed. That gift was more than just functional; it was personal, and it hit home
Atlas wasn’t just a pet—he was family. Seeing his memory honored in such a thoughtful, custom way was a powerful reminder: the most meaningful things in life aren’t mass-produced. They’re personal, they’re custom, and they tell your story.
That moment sparked an idea. Shawn started noticing the impact of custom work everywhere, especially a TikTok account making waves with custom patch hats. The idea wouldn’t let go: what if we could help people wear their story, celebrate their individuality, and stand out from the crowd?
When Shawn pitched the idea to Chris—the same guy behind those meaningful coasters—the partnership made sense. Chris brought the graphic design chops and technical skills; Shawn brought the drive and business sense. On April 4, 2024, Grim Hats was born.
